is bringing a traveling Smithsonian Exhibition to Alabama in
2009. New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music explores the
roots of American music - telling the story of its people and culture through
the melodies that define it. The exhibition provides a fascinating, inspiring,
and toe-tapping listen to the American story of multi-cultural exchange. It
offers opportunities for communities to collect and celebrate their musical
traditions.]
Proudly presents a combined
lecture/demonstration entitled,
"The Gospel Music Legacy of Mary Lena Lewis Tate: The Sermon Delivered
Through Song," an inspiring unique combination of the female-delivered
sermon and the gospel-music tradition.
Mary Lena Lewis Tate (1871-1930) is the turn-of-the-(20th)-Century
educator, freedom fighter, author, theologian, first ordained female bishop
and founder of the international religious organization, The Church of the
Living God, the Pillar and Ground of the Truth, Inc. (1903).The presentation will also feature the Sacred Steel Music Tradition.
Meharry H. Lewis, Ph.D., author, educator, and president of the Tuskegee Institute of Religion and Sacred Music, will present the lecture/demonstration:
