CLGPGT:Research and Writers Project

Mary Lena Lewis Tate

(1871-1930)

Dear Prospective Writer:

Mary LenaLewis Tate, Founder of the international religious organization The Church of the Living God, the Pillar and Ground of the Truth, Inc. in 1903, accomplished many firsts in her lifetime. Dubbed the woman who compassed a man (Jeremiah 31:22), she courageously entered the guarded halls of organized religion and thrust opened the doors for prepared women to ascend the ecclesiastical ladders of the clergy to become elders, bishops, and chief leaders in myriad religious organizations. In her stride, she successfully compassed many barriers of social and religious prejudice, bias, envy, and hatred. She surmounted the hurdles of education, communication, and transportation (walking, using barges, steamships, mule-drawn wagons, decrepit automobiles, and Jim Crowtrains) and prevailed. In her wake, thousands of eager women would don the colorful regalia of official ordination and, with authority, flood the formerly verboten podiums, pulpits, and rostrums of chapels and churches throughout the world.

Because the work of Mary Lena Lewis Tate is such a critical and important part of our country's heritage, the Lewis-Tate Foundation and Archives has been charged with the task of ensuring that the literary works about Bishop Tate are appropriately placed in research collections and libraries across the country. In order to increase the knowledge base about Mother Tate and the church she founded, the Lewis-Tate Foundation is spearheading a Research and Writers' Project to include people, like yourself, who have interests in, information about, and knowledge of CLGPGT church history and the people involved in that history. We are interested in highlighting the 'grass roots' people who made up the early organization and were instrumental in its expansion. We need your help. We want to help you become an author!

If you are interested in this project, please contact Dr. Lewis at the above address. We need your help (and others like you) and prayers that God will bless this endeavor.

Yours faithfully,

Meharry H. Lewis, Ph.D.
